Washington University
Meeting with Katie Beisel Hollenbach

I am immensely passionate about music and keen to pursue graduation in a related field. As an attempt to explore higher studies, I came across Washington University, situated in Seattle, Washington. I joined a meeting with Katie Beisel Hollenbach, the assistant director for admissions at Washington University and several other aspiring musicians.

This meeting was mainly about the university, its course structures and the admission process. The college has an average 7:1 student to teacher ratio. There are a lot of course options, not just music. Moreover, there are over 25 performing ensembles, which means you will almost certainly be able to be a part of one of them when you join the college, no matter which course you are studying. Additionally, there are 500,000 dollars awarded in scholarships offered to students each year.

There are many undergraduate degrees as options present such as Composition, Guitar, Jazz studies, Piano etc. A bachelor's in Ethnomusicology, which is related to cultural music, is also available as an undergraduate program, which is not commonly available in colleges. To help us decide which course works best for us, the university provides a Facebook group. There is also an unofficial Reddit page where one can discuss with other people informally. Further into the meeting, how the auditions for the admission will work was also discussed. This audition consists of one musical instrument of your choice that you will play. Overall, we got several tips for how to excel during the admission process and have a good time in the undergraduate program.
